Easy Q Hook Hat

Q crochet hook
Use 2-3 strands of 4-ply worsted weight yarn or 1 strand
of thick yarn such as Jiffy Thick and Quick - play with different combinations.
Even 1 strand of rug yarn works nicely.
Row 1: Chain 2. Work 6 sc in second chain from hook (1st chain). Slip stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc. Ch 1.
Row 2: Working in back loops only throughout (except for joining slip stitch) 2 sc
in each sc - 12 sc. Slip stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc. Ch 1.
Row 3: 1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc,* 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* repeat between
* around - 18 sc. Slip stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc. Ch 1.
Row 4: 1 sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* 1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* repeat
between * around - 24 sc. Slip stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc. Ch 1.
Row 5: (if yarn is real thick like chenille or rug yarn, this row should be skipped
or hat may be too big) 1 sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc,* 1 sc in next 3 sc,
2 sc in next sc* repeat between * around - 30 sc. Slip stitch to join into both
loops of 1st sc. Ch 1.
Rows 6-13: 1 sc in each sc around - 30 (or 24) sc. Slip
stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc at the end of each row. Ch 1. I always
try it on here and add another row if needed - I like it to come to the bottom
of my ears.
Various ways to finish:
Turned brim: Row 14: Turn the hat around to work back the other way.
Working in back loops only (except for joining slip stitch) 1 sc in each sc around
- this creates a turning row.
Rows 15-16: 1 sc in each
sc around - 30 (or 24) sc. Slip stitch to join into both loops of 1st sc at the
end of each row. Ch 1 at end of row 15.
At end of row 16 finish off or ch 1 and slip stitch though both loops around and
then finish.
Reverse crocheted edge:
Working through both loops, sc in stitch behind the one you are at. This takes some getting used to but creates
a nice ropey look. Continue around and finish at end.
Ruffle edge:
Working through
both loops, 3 sc in each sc around. Finish.
Slip stitch edge: Working through both loops, slip stitch in each sc around. Finish.
Hat variations:
Work sc through both loops thoughout. This may need an extra row or two to get
enough length.
This works well when the texture of the yarn would compete too much with the pattern
of back loop crocheting.
Don't join at the end of each row but just continuing on creating a spiral look
(working in back loops). Then using a smaller hook (maybe a J or K) and fun fur
work 2 sc in each front loop stitch. This uses less fun fur than if carried as
another strand thoughout and you don't need the fun fur on the inside.
